The nurse shark is a species of shark that lives in shallow waters near coral reefs, mangrove forests, and sandy beaches in the western Atlantic Ocean and eastern Pacific Ocean. They are named for their sluggish and slow-moving nature, and their ability to rest on the ocean floor. Nurse sharks are usually brown or gray in color, and have a flat head and barbels (sensory organs) on their snout. They are not considered to be aggressive and will generally only attack if provoked or threatened. Nurse sharks feed on a variety of prey including fish, squid, crustaceans, and even sea turtles. They can grow up to 14 feet in length, but are more commonly around 7-9 feet.
